Nominated for a JC (Judges Commendation), but not awarded, was this unusual peloric* Paphiopedilum hybrid, Armeni White. Exhibited by Roger Cole. Considerable discussion was had by the entire judging center regarding the nomination for a JC award. This offered a excellent learning experience for Student and Probationary Judges, the observing public, as well as a good review of the award for all accredited judges. Because, not all judges could agree on the merit of this award for this particular plant, the flower was not given a JC. After the decision was made not to give an award to this plant, the exhibitor commented on the possible influence of this clone as a parent in hybridizing. Traditional breeding within other genera using peloric plants, often produces hybrids with wider petals often with color only found in the lip. The Width of Paph. petals is always an important consideration when judging any flower award. This potential here is obvious. Perhaps less obvious is the spotting found inside the lip and on the petals. This color spotting in the petals is not seen in other clones of Armeni White, unless it is near the center of the flower around the column. It would be a breeders hope that this overall spotting of the petals would be conveyed to its offspring producing spots or even pink to maroon tones throughout the petals. The potential value of this clone and it's unique peloric trait, not usually seen in Paphiopedilums, is definitely noteworthy and hopefully, we'll be seeing more from this plant in the future. * Peloric = Petals that take on the characteristic of the lip. |
